Adolescence is a period of exciting possibility, change, and growth. At times, however, the changes and pressures can feel overwhelming. The combination of puberty, dynamic peer relationships, identity formation, dating, increasing school competition, and societal pressure to quickly mature are just a few of the struggles teens face. There may also be issues above and beyond the developmental tasks of adolescence that a teenager may need help with, such as divorce or remarriage, moving, loss of a loved one, learning disabilities, health problems, etc.
I provide adolescents a safe, non-judgmental space to reflect and think about the changes they are experiencing; the desires, hopes and worries they have; and their behavior and its impact. I approach them with respect, warmth, and empathy. Many adolescents can benefit from having a safe, respectful adult other than parents or relatives to explore their feelings and experience.
Some issues where I have been able to help adolescents include:
- Anxiety and worry
- Depression and sadness
- Conflicts at home and school
- Behavioral problems
- Relationships and dating
- Changes in family constellation
- Loss and grief
- Unsafe behaviors
- Sexual and gender identity
